This idea was sparked in the car when driving back from Gent comicon. We saw some hot air balloons flying by and that's when I thought of a kind of inventor-robot developing some wings for him to fly. A bit like Da Vinci's flying machines. For the design of my inventor-hero, I looked at Da Vinci's drawings of his 'flying machines'. I didn't want a pose with both wings spread out, because I felt it might be a little too static. The wings are obviously too small for such a heavy robot, but that's something he will no doubt discover later on today! :) To give it the Da Vinci-feel, I worked out a sepia background with some 'technical' sketches in pencil as a backdrop for the main character. I also added some details to give it a bit more life.
I remembered that Da Vinci used a secret code in his research note-books, just in case they fell into the wrong hands (because some of his research was cutting edge, but sometimes flirting with what was legal or acceptabe at the time-period). I used the same secret code in this painting: I mirrored the lettering done on a computer and then copied the mirrored text by hand. If you look at the illustration in a mirror, you'll be able to read a part of the adventures of our robot-inventor :). I'm quite happy with the result. I like his goofy face, maybe he'll invent a time machine in a delorian next! :)

On a beautifull spring day, Papa walks past 4MINIgeeks at a comicon in Gent. Papa loves walking amongst cosplayers and lots and lots of geeky stuff. And ofcourse FACTS is the best place to do just that. Mama and Papa just discovered that they're expecting a little Baby Boy: he is to be born in october. Ofcourse they want something special to announce the birth of their little Baby Boy. On that beautifull spring day, Papa finds exactly what they are looking for: a fantasy or sci-fi birth announcement! So he picks up our card, and shows Mama as soon as he got home. They browse our website and one of the illustrations catches their attention: a big sturdy robot walking with a duck toy! But something is missing .... Five months before their little one is due, they contact us for a custom made card. Mama and Papa know exactly what they want: the original illustration needs to be adjusted so that Baby Boy is the star of the card. A new painting is made and extra illustrations are added on the inside and the back of the card. Mama and Papa choose a background, the fonts and a papertype from the sample packet we sent them. Sketches are sent back and forward for approval. Mama and Papa also order their 'geboortesuiker' with us: magnets, buttons, colourfull boxes and VIP metal boxes printed with the design of the card ... and ofcourse filled with chocolate sweets (suikerbonen). We deliver them together with the original painting to Mama and Papa a month before Baby Boy is due, because you never know when babies decide to be born. ;) Then the waiting game begins: the digital file is ready to go, except for the date of birth ofcourse. :) On the 2nd of november we recieve a proud e-mail from Papa: little Konstantin was born at 23:46 the night before. We send the file to the printers and the cards are deliverd to Mama and Papa one day later.
Congratulations to Mama and Papa with their beautifull little boy. We loved being part of the first chapter of his story and we look forward to meeting little Konstantin in his first cosplay outfit :). |
