Congratulations to the parents of Tibo! On the 10th of march we got a message from Papa that their little one was born, a little early but happy and healthy :) Mama & Papa contacted us a few months earlier: they discovered an illustration with a dragon and a pram on our website which would be perfect for their birth announcement card. They visited for an intake where we discovered that they both love Efteling, the World of Wonder with a passion. Because Tibo will no doubt be visiting Efteling a lot, we decided to go for a fieldtrip to Efteling (for research purposes ;) and we incorporated some Efteling-inspired lights into the design of the card. Mama sent a picture of their Pet-cat, who joined the dragon on the front of the card. Mama & Papa also ordered stickers with little TIBO on it, 2 A2 posters with the main illustration for the godparents to enjoy and a little A7 baby shower invitation card with the same illustrations … on the 10th of march everything was sent to the printers and picked up by Papa a few days later so they could announce the wonderfull news to friends and family.
We really enjoyed working on this project, especially the fieldtrip :) and hope that Tibo will get to enjoy his first trip to Efteling very soon!

Congratulations to the parents of Katrien! We got a message during Comic Con Brussels this weekend that their little girl was born! Mama and Papa had already bought an illustration from 4MINIgeeks for the children's room: a little girl and her dragonfriend looking at the moon from a tree branch. For the birth announcement of their little princess, they wanted to continue the story. For the front of the card the little girl and dragon had turned around to look towards the viewer and on the back of the card both of them are flying away. Sketches were sent back and forward. The original concept had a RPG-card lay-out, but Mama & Papa decided they wanted the illustration to take up the whole front of the card. On the back of the card we added their two pet-cats. Mama & Papa also ordered boxes filled with treats/suikerbonen to celebrate the birth of little Kartrien. The boxes and the original painting were picked up a few weeks before the due date and then the waiting game began! Hopefully little Katrien has wonderfull dreams under the watchfull eye of her dragon friend.
Gongrats to the parents of Roxanne! Their little girl was their very special Valentines gift last week. Mama & Papa met us at Elftopia and decided that the story of little Roxanne needed a big friendly dragon in it. They contacted us for a custom made birth announcement card and ordered a big version (40x50 cm) of the original painting. The size of the painting allowed alot more detail. The big friendly dragon will be joining little Roxanne in her room :). Sketches were sent back and forward: Mama and Papa have a passion for sailing so a boat on the card was added, their pet turtle was moved from the water to the land (because we learned land turtles can't swim), and their lovely dog also found a place on the front of the card. Mama and Papa thought it would be a good idea to decorate the little jars with treats (suikerbonen) with the theme of the card, so they ordered some stickers for the lids. With everything ready, the waiting game begins. Around midnight on Valentine's day, Roxanne decided it was time to meet her parents. Papa sent us a text and a few days later they could pick up their cards from a pick-up point near them. We hear that little Roxanne is a good sleeper, so maybe the back of the card was a self fulfilling prophecy ;).
Gelukkige verjaardag Otis! Nine months ago, Mama and Papa found out the great news: Liene is on her way! Mama and Papa started looking for the perfect birth announcement card to share the news .... and they actually found it two years ago at our booth at F.A.C.T.S. They decide to visit our home to brainstorm and tell us about their plans: they decide to go for a RPG-card with an illustration from our website which will be slightly adjusted to match the format of the card. Ofcourse Big Sister also has a part to play: she makes a cameo appearance on the inside of the card, holding on to her favourite cuddly toy! Mama & Papa also order matching boxes for the "suikerbonen"/sweets. The boxes will be filled with M&M's, so they order boxes in matching colours! Papa's talent as a mobile app designer, also prooves very usefull: he's got great idea's for the gamecard-lay out for the front of the card. The result is a beautifull gamecard birth announcement in co-creation to welcome Liene into the world! Mails go back and forward untill we have a card design that suits them to a T. We make a print-ready file and the waiting game begins. Mama & Papa drop by our house to pick up the boxes. On the 9th of may we recieve a textmessage from Papa: little Liene is born. She's a healthy little girl of 3.95 kg and 52 cm! We fill in the last details on the card and send the file off to the printers. As soon as we get word from the printer, we send Papa a message so he can pick up the cards at the pick-up point near where they live!
Congratulations to Mama and Papa with their beautifull little girl. To kick-start this blog: a tutorial about a white dragon.
Painting a white creature is generally quite difficult. The biggest challenge is to mix the main character in with its background. Since a few years I've been using a collage technique. In this particular painting it made blending the dragon in with the background even more of a challenge! I first painted the background so I could plan the shadowing and highlights of the dragon. In the first few layers of the creature I painted the shadows roughly and made sure that the lightest part (e.g. the head) stayed the center of focus. I also added contrasting colors, like pinks and purples, because oddly enough it makes the white look more like white in the final painting. When I was happy with the balance of the shadows and highlights, I added a few layers of detail. I cut out the dragon and put it on the background to make the final adjustments before glueing it onto the background. Hope you like the end result! |
